Korea Republic stun Germany to progress, USA and Nigeria advance

Korea Republic stun Germany, Nigeria send Venezuela packing.

Korea Republic have pulled off the biggest upset at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Colombia 2024™ to stun Germany with a 1-0 win in Bogota that sent them through to the knockout stage as one of the best four third-place finishers.

USA brushed aside their goalscoring woes to put seven past Paraguay while Spain weren't quite at their best but stayed perfect with a 2-0 victory over Morocco.

Elsewhere, Nigeria were far too good for Venezuela with Chiamaka Okwuchukwu involved in three of the four goals as the Falconets finish second to set up a round of 16 clash with either Japan or Austria.

Group D | Estadio El Techo, Bogota

Park Soojeong’s clinical finish and strong goalkeeping from Woo Seobin paved the way for a stunning 1-0 Korea Republic win over Germany in their Group D finale in Bogota.

The victory sends Korea Republic through to the knockout stage, for the first time since 2014, as one of the best four third-place teams. Despite the loss, Germany claimed top spot in the group, just ahead of Nigeria.

It was a direct passage of play that led to the Korea Republic goal in the 22nd minute. Woo sent a long ball forward, Jeon Yugyeong kept it going with a flicked-on header, hitting the stride of Park Soojeong for what would turn out to be the only goal of the game.

At a tournament where so many young stars have shone, Nigeria’s Chiamaka Okwuchukwu is up there with the very best of them. The Cristiano Ronaldo-admiring winger provided a collection of crosses that the Portuguese great would have been proud of as Nigeria thrashed Venezuela to reach the knockouts.

It was an early Okwuchukwu cut-back that teed Amina Bello up for the opener before provider turned scorer with Okwuchukwu rising to meet a header and make it two just shy of the half hour.

Another delightful ball from the Falconets star winger put it on a plate that was eagerly gobbled up by Flourish Sabastine for the third and substitute Joy Igbokwe capped the dominant win off with a thunderbolt from all of 40 yards in second half stoppage time.

Nigeria finishing second in the section, meaning they will face either Japan or Austria in the round of 16 while Venezuela finish bottom and make an early exit.
