Germany won an end-to-end, chance-heavy thriller to march through to the knockout phase of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024™. Alara Sehitler, Sofie Zdebel and Sarah Ernst got their goals, with Cora Zicai assisting the first two. Nigeria, for whom Chiamaka Okwuchukwu scored and sizzled, remain on three points. Okwuchukwu almost broke the deadlock with a goal for the ages. She dashed from deep inside the Nigeria half into the Germany penalty area, but Rebecca Adamczyk made herself big and made the save with her outstretched right leg. Kathrin Peter’s charges quickly punished the miss. Zicai somehow retained possession on the right wing and delivered a supreme cross over the goalkeeper to the back post, which Sehitler nodded home. Marie Steiner then headed another teasing Zicai centre narrowly wide.

Sehitler thrilled the crowd with a glorious turn, but her subsequent shot was blocked, before Lisa Baum failed to make a good connection on the ball when merely yards out. Nigeria had the last opportunity of the period, Rofiat Imuran racing through on goal but watching Adamczyk repel her effort. Okwuchukwu finally got on the score-sheet shortly into the second half. Jella Veit got their wires crossed, and the Nigeria No2 sprinted on to the loose ball and stroked in into an empty net. A siuuuuu celebration ensued but the Falconets’ smiles didn’t last long.

Zicai was once again the creator. This time her cross was low, with Zdebel doing well to keep the bouncing ball down and ripple the net. A splendid Okwuchukwu goal was then ruled out for offside, while Zicai headed over following excellent work by Sophie Nachtigall. Germany did get their third with time running out. Miriam Hils crossing for Ernst to bullet a header home. The teams will play their final group games on Saturday. Germany stay in Bogota to take on Korea Republic, while Nigeria face Venezuela in Cali.
